Nutritional Therapy for Improving Cancer Treatment Outcomes and Reducing the Risk of Recurrence

articles Feb 20, 2022

Have you been diagnosed with cancer or have completed cancer treatment and want to do everything in your power to improve your treatment outcomes or prevent disease recurrence? You have come to the right place.

There are few words as scary as ‘you have cancer’. It feels like the ground beneath your feet is crumbling and any control you thought you had over your life is snapped away. I remember when I heard my doctor speak those words. All my so-called ‘problems’ suddenly vanished and all I could feel was shock. Then fear, anger, and finally, complete overwhelm. A quote that captures what I felt in that moment is, “Health is not valued until sickness comes” (Thomas Fuller).

Cancer is a complex process and requires a multifactorial approach in its treatment. Conventional treatments are critical but they are only a part of your treatment plan.  Let’s face it, there is no magic bullet when it comes to healing from cancer, and we need to pull out all the stops.

So what am I talking about when I say ‘pull out all the stops’? I’m talking about how you live your life and what you put into your body, outside of undergoing conventional treatment.

But where should you start? Who should you turn to? There are mountains of information out there about lifestyle and diet and it doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed to the point of giving up or breaking down. As a cancer survivor, I know how it feels to want to make sense of a situation without speaking the language. Before my cancer diagnosis, I was living a lifestyle that I thought was ‘healthy’. I was completely oblivious to the role my diet and lifestyle had on my health before cancer happened, let alone when it did!

To help my clients get started on living a cancer-protective lifestyle, I created the Daily Guide to Cancer-Kicking Foods that features the top scientifically proven cancer-fighting foods. If you haven't yet, download your FREE copy here

Whether you are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, or have completed treatment, there is so much you can do to optimize your nutritional status, promote healing, and help keep cancer at bay.

Of these three lifestyle pillars, the most important tool in your toolkit is nutrition. Between 40-80% of cancer patients are malnourished and malnutrition causes one in five cancer-related deaths. To top it off, most cancer patients don't have access to nutritional support during and after treatment.

Hundreds of studies demonstrate that healthy lifestyle factors can suppress the development of many cancers, prevent disease recurrence, as well as reduce the risk of other chronic diseases. These factors include diet, weight control, and physical activity. The choices we make MATTER. When we change the input, we help to change the output.

You deserve to be informed and to feel empowered to take an active part in your healing. To take control of your recovery and to be the driver in your healing journey.

Taking matters into your own hands should start with your dietary habits and it should start at diagnosis.

Whether you are living with a cancer diagnosis or have completed treatment, eating a nutrient-dense diet is critical to preventing malnutrition, optimizing treatment outcomes, reducing treatment side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and preventing disease recurrence and secondary cancers.

It’s not just a matter of eating your fruits and veggies. It’s about learning how to adhere to a specific dietary pattern that has been proven to reduce the risk of many types of cancer, as well as unique foods that have been shown to suppress cancer cells directly.
